EMERGING ARTISTS

So lovely is this windows-open morning, as I begin my day reading in my soft chair.  Together the waking songs of birds and the pattering of feet, running and hoping not to be late for the bus, make a sweet soundtrack for the story I hold in my hands.

Ten years ago, the pattering feet might have been Katie’s and Maddie’s. Both these young women, now exhibiting their art in the galleries of Hyde House, grew up as school girls in Carthage with family roots deeply set in the soil of southwest Missouri, where creative talent grows as distinctive and lush as the herbs in my flourishing cottage gardens.

What joy and blessing to know Katie Watson and Maddie Capps, both interns at artCentral, along with Emma Pound who’s soon to be a Carthage High School graduate and off to begin her architectural studies at KU.

EMMA POUND
While Emma has poured her talents and energies into her senior year, dancing, working and creating the artCentral archives, Katie at the University of Central Missouri and Maddie at CHS, have been pursuing their own studies and making art for their “Emerging Artists” mixed media exhibition.

“Emerging Artists: Katie and Maddie” begins this Friday night with the Reception, 6-8 pm at Hyde House. The exhibition will be open during posted weekend hours until May 15th and afterwards may be viewed through June 5th by appointment at (417) 358-4404. Both opening and exhibition are made possible by the generous underwriting of the Helen S. Boylan Foundation.

In addition to Katie’s stunning scherenschnitte (scissor cut) artworks and Maddie’s extraordinarily perceptive photography, “Emerging Artists” features the award winning  selections in Carthage High School’s Helen S. Boylan Foundation Art and Writing Contest.

The public is invited and encouraged to visit Hyde House for “Emerging Artists”. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Come enjoy the creativity of our fine local talents—young artists going places. What a privilege to celebrate the early beginnings of their journeys. Make an art purchase or two or three to enjoy in your home or office. Help them buy supplies for their masterpieces yet to come. Support these aspiring, young artists with your dollars.
And…please remember to support artCentral on Give Ozarks Day, May 3rd, sponsored by the Carthage Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.  Don't wait. Donating is easy.

Devon Estes, MSSU Co-Curator and Art Faculty Exhibitor

CO-CURATING IS FUN

What fun to have Devon Estes co-curate “Radiant 88” with me. We prep for months—beginning with my pitch to the MSSU art faculty. While I keep artCentral’s many discs spinning and Devon makes two trips across the pond to teach a gig in Sweden and to lead a student art trip to Great Britain, with Devon as the faculty point person, we email back and forth refining details.

All our “Radiant 88” plans beautifully manifest on a sunny Sunday afternoon as artCentral’s sparkling green front door swings back and forth, welcoming the deliveries of our faculty exhibitors. Frank Pishkur, Kyle McKenzie, Peggy Lierheimer, Ed Outhouse, Amber Mintert, Burt Bucher and Scott Murray bring a curator’s dream—a diverse and provocative collection.

At my suggestion, Devon’s larger, sculptural pieces are placed first, followed by Frank Pishkur’s ceramics. We discuss Ed Outhouse’s desire to have his eight 2D graphics grouped together. We agree the Sandy Higgins Members Gallery is the right space for this to happen, and upstairs they are carried. The works of Kyle, Peggy, Ed, Amber, Burt and Scott move easily into place.

As Devon hangs artworks, I use the master inventory and create a mail merge that generates a wall label for each piece. With these mounted and the white gallery walls touched up to perfection, “Radiant 88” is ready to open!

Friday night’s Opening was stunning and fun, thanks to the generous underwriting of the Missouri Southern Alumni Association, headed by Brad Hodson, and the creative planning and presentation orchestrated by the lovely Lee Pound with the assistance of Meagan Adams and Penny Richeson. Delightful taste treats by Kathy Gilpin’s Fleur de Lis with boutique libations by Andrew Pennington of Keltoi Winery made for a perfect party. Josie Mai, Spiva’s new director and artCentral member, made a celebrity appearance!

In a continuing spirit of fun, “Radiant 88” remains on view through April 23 during usual weekend gallery hours. For information: (417) 358-4404.

Twirling

Twirling, twirling and loving every minute!

An insightful person just said to me, “You must be really busy with artCentral.” Trying to avoid using the “busy” word, “For sure,” I respond, “artCentral’s dance card is really full! I’m twirling, twirling and loving every minute.”

Sometimes a girl just has to twirl. Dancing and twirling…life is fun!
While living just off NYC’s Sheridan Square I conclude my culturally astute Greek man friend and I are no longer feeling joyful together, though our lives are full and busy. I paint, design for a small fashion house and manage their Greenwich Village boutique. During the week, Stavros commutes to his Jersey medical practice. We travel some and spend time with friends at his summer house on Fire Island; make frequent field trips to the Cloisters, the Met and MOMA; share summer and holiday visits with my children; and take the ferry to Staten Island to celebrate family Easter feasts. Though ours has been a fluid duet, sadly our steps are faltering.

Rocking in the quiet of my garret studio, I ponder my next move—a dance move—a twirl into toe tapping newness.

Spinning
Indeed! One of my great Big Apple pleasures is discovering the contra and English dance community that gathers weekly in the grand hall of a nearby church. I love this scene on that very first night when I walk from my Barrow Street brownstone and onto the dance floor. All through the evening the band’s energetic musicians play lively old tunes for the swirling couples, leaving them and me breathless.

At this blissful beginning I twirl with a bagpipe-playing younger man who’s music director for the maverick composer, MacArthur genius, Meredith Monk. With one spin, I’m swept up and hanging out like a groupie in Manhattan’s music and dance communities. Leaving my
Carrol Gardens fifth floor walk-up in Brooklyn, I take the subway uptown and down or the train to out-of-city gigs, carrying my brushes everywhere, always finding a corner or a couch for perching while making my paintings.

Eventually I’m honored to install and exhibit my newest art as backdrop for the wedding of two American Ballet Theatre soloists—coupling for life as I uncouple with my musician man and return to Arkansas to see my parents through their end times.

So many twirlings and spinnings have brought me to the spring dance now in full swing at artCentral.

Though artCentral’s dance card is full—books to balance, Board reports to prepare, grants to write, artCamp curriculum to plan, Newsletter #2 to be published—we’re saving a special dance just for you.

The “Radiant 88” exhibit opens at Friday’s Reception, 6-8 pm.

Come twirl with us and we’ll have you feeling light on your feet!
