DÉNOUEMENT

“Dénouement” (day-nou-ma)—yet another French word that sounds so magical to me.

Google tells us that “Dénouement” is the final outcome of a story, generally occurring after the climax of the plot. Often it's where all the secrets (if there are any) are revealed and loose ends are tied up.”

Amen! to our Holiday Boutique’s final outcome preceded by the climax of the plot and completed with the telling of our secrets and the tying up of loose ends.
For artCentral’s 2015 Holiday Boutique “Dénouement”, the climax of the plot took place, following months of preparation, as the doors of Hyde House were opened for three days welcoming a stream of shoppers arriving to select and purchase artist-created gifts and fundraising Delectables, Amaryllis and Ornaments.

The final outcome for our “Dénouement” is the dream of a Holiday Boutique transformed into a fabulously successful reality raising income for artCentral artists and funds for artCentral to continue in our work supporting art and artists in the year to come.

Our secrets to reveal include the generosity of art-loving Carthaginians and neighbors who shopped locally in support of art and artists plus our amazing cadre of artCentral Voluncheers.
Our tying up of loose ends continues where I left off last week, saying thank you to all artCentral’s Holiday Boutique Voluncheers (those helpers who happily pitched in, lending needed assistance from a place of really wanting to contribute.)

Thank you! Thank you!...

VOLUNCHEERS ARE THE BEST ELVES EVER!

Recently artCentral hosted the Chamber of Commerce’s early Morning Coffee sponsored by the MSSU Alumni Association. I stood at the front door greeting guests with Mary Jo Little of the Chamber and Lee Pound, MSSU Director of Alumni Relations. When there was a pause in the guest arrivals, Mary Jo, Lee and I chatted about the extraordinary volunteer support that turned artCentral’s Holiday Boutique dream into an amazing, successful reality.
As we good humoredly riffed on possible spins for the word “volunteer”, we came up with these variations:
Volun-teer—A helper who reliably shows up, sometimes from a feeling of “I should”.
Volun-told—A helper (perhaps a husband) who dutifully does a job, having been so ordered.
Volun-cheer—A helper who happily pitches in and lends needed assistance from a place of really wanting to contribute.

“Voluncheers” are the Best Elves Ever! I feel I can speak with authority, since Hyde House has been filled with Voluncheer Power all through this year, especially in this festive season.
Picture
For instance, after the Chamber’s last guest had left, lingering in the kitchen was Chamber President Mark Eallif, standing at the sink. With sleeves rolled up and requested tools in hand, he diagnosed the faucet’s problem and offered a simple remedy for the aggravating minimal water output which has been testing the patience of Voluncheers washing up after events. Mark is definitely a Voluncheer. Thank you Mark for helping.

I’m grateful for all voluncheer guy power! Thanks to Board Treasurer, Pat Goff, who cheerfully, with the assistance of Terry Beetem, distributed and collected Boutique banners, repaired our falling-off vintage refrigerator handle and transformed our porch lights into sparkling beacons of greeting. Thank you to the two of you!

And thanks to Voluncheer Board Members Jackie Boyer and Jane Van Den Berg, who gave so generously to the greening and prepping of Hyde House. For over a week, contributing from their own decorations and gathering more as needed, Jackie and Jane spent many, many outside hours elegantly dressing and festooning Hyde House with evergreen wreaths and swags with twinkling lights. Inside they decorated the Christmas tree then set up the tables and displays for the artist-created gift items.

Once the Boutique opened, a fabulous cadre of Voluncheers made magic greeting and assisting guests, gift wrapping, checking out purchases and staying late to tabulate sales. Grateful Thank Yous go out to these Voluncheer elves. I’ll acknowledge you by name next week when I tell about the terrific success of our Holiday Boutique Fundraisers—Delectables, Amaryllis and hand-painted Ornaments.

Until then…Dear Readers, with good cheer I wish for you, “Sweet, Serene and Happy Holy Days as we rejoice in this glorious Season of Love and Light!”

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR ENERGY?

With frequency I’m asked, “Where do you get your energy?”

Answer: “I practice being happy by living from my passion—my passion for happiness and health—fueled by daily work I love and lots of exercise (walking, lap swimming and yoga plus a terrific up-and-down workout on artCentral’s stairs); time with lots of happy-hearted people; balanced nutrition (or as the French say, “Mange bien et juste”—“eat well and right”); and the cultivation of a rich spiritual life.
For this entire year, artCentral has kept me in expanded mode—engaging with a multiplicity of good folks and moving at full throttle through a splendid diversity of tasks and activities including most recently artCentral’s first Holiday Boutique, our annual Board of Directors Christmas Luncheon and the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Friday Coffee sponsored by the Missouri Southern State University Alumni Association.

When I’m “on” I’m constantly opening my supportive mental and physical apps and switch-tasking between them, which means my energy eventually runs down and requires recharging, especially after an intense stretch like the one just enjoyed.
Picture
Recognizing my energy has an ebb and flow rhythm, I aspire to mindfully keep tabs on my vital signs—my thoughts and my feelings—that tell me when I’m in sync and when I need to pause, seek solitude, practice stillness and take time to re-source and gather more energy.

“How and where do I re-source when I’m seeking renewed energy?” Answer: I un-plug to plug-in. I go home to my heart.

After living at my edge for any extended time, I go home where I can breathe in peace as I tap into eternal source energy vibrating within and through me. Home where the light of source energy pulses inside me like a glowing coal on a hearth waiting to be fanned into the reality of burning brightness. Home to my rhythmically pumping heart where I can rest, align, re-source and bask in happiness.
Picture
Bottom line, where does my energy come from? My energy comes from my happiness.  And how do I find happiness? I choose my thoughts and go with the happy ones.  I surround myself with what pleases, supports and inspires me—especially serene and elegant beauty.
I do what I love and love what I do. I get on an east bound plane whenever I can and go play and make art with Sophie my granddaughter and Trooper the Doberman. Playing and making art with a two year old and her dog, while I visit with my daughter and my son-in-law, supercharges my energy and gives me blissful happiness.

In this glittering season of celebration, I wish you abundant energy, happiness and health! Where do you go to get yours?

A TIME FOR CELEBRATION

This morning, beneath twinkling crystals in Hyde House’s chandeliered gallery, plates and stems sparkle on our table spread with red and green plaid cloths. Soon, as carols softly stream through the house, artCentral’s Board Members will arrive for our annual Christmas Luncheon. But first, upstairs we go to the Board Room to work.
Today, as each second Wednesday of every month, nine dedicated folks take time from their very full lives to come and faithfully give their gifts and do good work on behalf of the art and artists artCentral supports throughout the year. For their presence in my life and at artCentral I am daily grateful to Jackie Boyer; Betsy Flanigan; Pat Goff, Treasurer; Eric Haun, President; Lonnie Heckmaster; Helen Kunze; Brenda Sageng; Jane VanDenBerg; and Gail White, Membership Chairwoman.

As our Board Meeting conversations are enhanced with the anticipatory aromas of our festive meal prepared by the extraordinary culinary talents of Judy Goff, our agenda today will address artCentral’s celebrations since our November meeting. These celebrations are many—Jim and Diana Bray’s FALLING INTO PLACE exhibit; Candlelight Yoga led by Stacey Stiles; classes given by April Davis and Sarah Serio; the rental of Hyde House for a baby shower; and artCentral’s first HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE.

And, oh! what a fabulous HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE we have just completed. During preview and shopping hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, artCentral Board Members and artCentral volunteers welcomed and assisted a lovely flow of guests who were greeted with fragrantly warm cups of wassail and an array of delightful delectables.

The artist-created gift treasures to be found were satisfyingly unique, abundant and available at pocket friendly prices—hand-blown glass and charmingly decorated ornaments; mugs, cutting boards and coasters; hand-painted silk scarves, upcycled fiber hats and dresses; note cards, prints and paintings; ceramics in sizes, shapes and colors galore; jewelry; cooking and sophisticated cartoon books; and fundraising Amaryllis.

Concluding our Board Meeting and gathering around our
holiday table to break bread and give thanks together, we are in appreciation for each and every soul who breathes beautiful life into our artCentral community—to all the children who attend classes and artCamp and come with families to Exhibitions and Openings; to all our artCentral artists who contribute their best whenever they are beckoned; to all the volunteers who work cheerfully and tirelessly to manifest our dreams into bright and shining realities; to our teachers and instructors who generously offer guidance to those aspiring to learn; to our Members and to our community underwriters, businesses and organizations who lend their financial support to help artCentral enrich the cultural life of our community.

To each and every one of you we say Thank You! We joyfully celebrate you!

artCentral's HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE DREAM

John Lennon poignantly penned, “Imagine all the people living for today…you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.”

Today and every day I dream of artCentral sharing art, supporting artists, inspiring children and welcoming guests to Hyde House, especially in this beautiful season.

Indeed, I’m not the only dreamer! Many, many artCentral dreamers are giving their time and
talents to imagining, dreaming and greening and transforming Hyde House into a magical, glittering HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE filled with pocket friendly artist-created art, gifts, ornaments and delectables for your shopping delight and pleasure.

Come celebrate artCentral’s beautiful dream! Join us at Hyde House tomorrow for Thursday evening’s HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE PREVIEW and SHOPPING, 6-8pm, underwritten by Beimdiek Insurors.

Take a Boutique tour with me now and share in our anticipatory excitement!

Driving east on Thirteenth Street, looking on the right to Hyde House Hill, you find artCentral elegantly dressed in lush, light-festooned, evergreen garlands and red-bowed wreaths a là decorating talents and many, many donated hours of Jackie Boyer and Jane VanDenBerg. Stepping through our open door, you delight in Hyde House perfumed with holiday scents of wine, wassail and savories divinely created by gourmet, Judy Goff and her bevy of cheerful volunteers.

In the grand entry hall you’re greeted with a rising fund-raising Amaryllis array inspired by Gail White—potted and cared for by Gail and her dedicated committee. These crimson beauties make lovely gifts for teachers, family, friends and your home. All proceeds go to support artCentral’s work on behalf of art and artists.

Moving through the downstairs Galleries, a sparkling red shopping bag in hand, you’ll discover the angel-topped tree bedecked with exquisite hand blown glass balls painted with Scandinavian scenes by Ruth Olsen of Minnesota. More enchanting artist ornaments, suspended before the expansive windows, lend a dazzling backdrop to the amazing artist displays offering jewelry, ceramics, paintings, prints, puzzles, cards, pillows, knitted hats, artful novelty gifts and many, many more holiday treasures.

Having savored and selected from the downstairs offerings, making your way up to the Sandy Higgins Members Gallery, Sally Armstrong Library and Boardroom Boutique, you’ll discover astoundingly bountiful, beautiful, unique and present-perfect artist creations.

You’re shopping needs blissfully fulfilled, passing through artCentral’s vintage kitchen you’ll want to choose a few fund-raising delectables lovingly made by artCentral Board Members and creatively labeled by Miriam Putnam. For a modest donation you can enlist Cindy Chilton to work her gift-wrapping magic.

John Lennon poignantly penned, “Imagine all the people living for today…you may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” artCentral’s dream unfolds tomorrow. Come revel in our dream-come-true!

artCentral’s HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE is also open for shopping, Friday, 3-8pm, and Saturday, 9am-4pm. Information: (417)358-4404.
