HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE TIME!

At last! Holiday Boutique time is here! Admission is free for all three days.

Yes, the rumors are true! While a small collection of Betsy Pauly prints will be available, in the fund raising Silent Auction, for a $5.00 opening bid you’ll have a chance to purchase an Andy Thomas original oil,  fresh from his easel.

Tomorrow, Thursday, November 30, 5-8pm, is Preview Shopping and the Silent Auction launch with wine, wassail, sweets and savories.
Friday afternoon and evening, 3-8pm, shopping and Silent Auction bidding times continue with wine, wassail and sampler treats.

Saturday, 9am-4pm, is morning and afternoon shopping with wine, wassail and sampler treats. The Silent Auction bidding concludes at 3:30pm.

Have you seen our historic Hyde House all decked out in her holiday regalia? She’s enchanting!

Just drive east on 13th Street off Grand Avenue, cross River Street and look to your right until you approach the glow of twinkling lights shining on the hill. Come up our gentle drive and through our green door of hospitality, and you’ll be amazed by the artistic wonderland inside.

artCentral’s limited edition scarlet amaryllis will greet you in sparkling, elegantly gold-bowed containers. They make lovely gifts for everyone on your list. Each is modestly priced at $25.00 and planted to bloom at the peak of the holiday festivities. You can reserve one or several by calling artCentral in advance or during the Boutique. Another Holiday Boutique favorite, artCentral’s vintage cookbook, “Palettes and Palates” is only $5.00: $25.00 for an artist signed copy.”

Created for your shopping pleasure throughout the house in the galleries upstairs and down you’ll find a stunning abundance of unique gifts. Our talented local, regional and national participating artists include Jane Ballard, Bethany Baugh, Karen Brust, Cheryl Church, April Davis, Becky Golubski, Helen Kunze, Alice Lynn Greenwood-Mathé, Brenda Hayes, Marcia Huff, Edward Lee, Liko Lee, Koral Martin, Jane McCaulley, Carol McRoy, Dustin Miller, Salissa Robinson, Emily Rose, Lee Ann Sours, Michael Steddum, Dan Trogdon, Paula Ware and Marilyn York.

Made by these talents you’ll find a rich array of jewelry, woven bookmarks and small books; handcrafted soaps and lotions; magnets, cutting boards, coasters and mugs; notecards, prints and paintings; glass ornaments and novelties; and fiber creations such as hats, scarves and garments.
New to this year’s boutique will be exquisite rosaries designed and created by artist and artCentral docent Emily Rose. Emily’s been in Carthage just over a year and is finding our artistic community to be a source of inspiration. In her words: “Loving artCentral is easy for me! While nurturing local talent, both established and emerging, artCentral provides the perfect place to display works of beauty. The peaceful main galleries at Hyde House possess a charm and elegance from another time.  They provide a refuge from a world that sometimes fails to focus on concerns that feed the spirit.

Carthage is a dream reality far apart from San Francisco, a place where I had no choice but to work hard as an accountant who painted on the side, because living costs were too expensive to do my life the other way around.

I never imagined such a magical little place existed before visiting Carthage for the first time on a late summer afternoon.  My GPS led me to the Square and a group of practicing artists at Art Walk. The spell was cast and I brought my meager possessions to a simple Carthage apartment a month later, setting aside the bedroom for my studio and sleeping in the living room.

Besides my love for painting portraits and still life in oil, I’ve found a new passion while staffing the artCentral gallery.  One of my dear friends recently converted to Catholicism and I wanted to give her something meaningful.  What’s more appropriate for a new Catholic than a hand-crafted rosary made from special stones, customized to represent that individual’s spiritual goals?  This was the inception of Bird of Pray Sacred Jewelry.

I enjoy combining semi-precious stones and glass with beautifully crafted metal pieces, adding in a red glass drop to remind the devotee of the redemptive blood of Christ. To create an object used in the very personal ritual of prayer is a great privilege. I’m thrilled to bring to artCentral my new collection for Christmas shopping. At last! Holiday Boutique time is here!”

OUR SCARLET AMARYLLIS: THEY’RE STUNNING!

When artCentral’s board members mix and mingle with guests in artCentral’s galleries during artist receptions, I love the snippets of conversations I overhear.

“Our signature scarlet amaryllis. They’re stunning!” exclaims board member Gail White to a first time visitor at Hyde House anticipating our Holiday Boutique.

Gail knows a lot about amaryllis. When she moved to Carthage and began her board tenure, she brought the “scarlet amaryllis fund raiser” idea all the way from a service league in New Jersey. For our third Holiday Boutique Gail’s volunteering her time and talents to help make our scarlet amaryllis a stunning success raising funds to support artCentral’s work on behalf of art and artists in our hometown and in our neighboring communities.
I continue to listen in as Gail enthusiastically shares her love for our amaryllis. “They’re beautiful for decorating homes and businesses. Back east I saw them lining a friend’s winding staircase and on each desk in an office. A local friend of mine purchased twelve last year and is now reserving more for several clients on her gift list. And of course, I’m buying some for myself!

Each scarlet amaryllis in artCentral’s limited edition is presented in a sparkling container and elegantly gold-bowed. Several weeks ago, Judy Goff planted them to bloom at the peak of the holiday festivities. Their modest $25.00 price makes them lovely gifts for everyone on your list. You can reserve one or several now and prepay by calling artCentral in advance of the Boutique.

Another Holiday Boutique favorite, artCentral’s vintage cookbook, “Palettes and Palates” is only five dollars, twenty-five dollars for an artist signed copy.”

Our guest wants to know more about the Holiday Bouquet and artCentral. Gail continues to sing our praises. “The Holiday Boutique promises the tastiest of treats and the best of holiday shopping. I am so excited! Each artist is given a spacious area of artCentral to display their creations.  They’ll have paintings and prints and jewelry and pottery and lots more.  You can also bid on an opportunity to buy a 4”x4” original on canvas created by an artCentral member artist.

What a great opportunity to purchase original art made by our very own local artists. We have them in abundance. Their large number is unique to our area.  We’re so fortunate to share our hometown with some of the most talented artists in the country. Our director reminds us, some of our artists have achieved celebrity status in the art world!”

Gail explains, “I read once that shoppers shouldn’t buy generic art from big box and home goods stores. We need weird and beautiful on your walls. I couldn’t agree more. One-of-a-kind artwork should be collected over a lifetime. The Holiday Boutique and artCentral exhibitions give you opportunities to purchase affordable and unique presents for people on your gift lists and for you to add to your own collection.”

Gail White is one of nine members who serve on artCentral’s board of directors. All are equally passionate and dedicated in their commitment to serving artCentral on behalf of art and artists. I’m privileged to work with each of them and to have the continuing, hardworking and unfailing support of my artist husband, David, artCentral’s prepitor (worker person). Together with your help we’re able to make artCentral a sparkling Carthage jewel and a cultural destination for travelers.

Please do mark your calendars to support artists and the artistic life of our community as you do your holiday shopping. Visit our beautiful, historic Hyde House for our Holiday Boutique where you’ll definitely find our signature scarlet amaryllis. They’re stunning!

November 30, Thursday, 5-8pm, is the Holiday Boutique Preview, Silent Auction launch and your first shopping opportunity with wine, wassail, sweets and savories.

December 1, Friday afternoon and evening, 3-8pm, shopping and Silent Auction bidding times continue with wine, wassail and sampler treats.

December 2, Saturday, 9am-4pm, is morning and afternoon shopping with wine, wassail and sampler treats. The Silent Auction bidding concludes at 3:30pm.

Admission is free for all three Holiday Boutique days. As always, donations to artCentral are welcome and greatly appreciated.

As a perfect beginning for your holidays, here’s a “just-for-fun” recipe from artCentral’s vintage cookbook, “Palettes and Palates”. Stir up a batch, sample, sit back and relax while you read this behind-the-scenes look at artCentral’s third Holiday Boutique opening November 30, 2017.

Combine patience, love and generosity with understanding. Add a dash of laughter and humor. Sprinkle generously with kindness. Add faith and an extra large portion of dedication. Serve everyone you meet.

Animated by this Recipe for Happiness, magic happens year-round in the theater that’s artCentral—especially at this changing-of-the-scenes time when our physical world dramatically transforms from the rich lushness of autumn’s colorful abundance to the subtle serenity of winter’s beautifully bare landscape. While twirling leaves finish falling, behind Hyde House’s green door of hospitality, happy preparations are unfolding for our third annual Holiday Boutique featuring a wonderland of artist created gift items.

As soon as David and I carried down the holiday decorations from the attic, board members Jackie Boyer, president, and Jane Van Den Berg began artCentral’s stunning seasonal metamorphosis. Today historic Hyde House, our foursquare farmhouse on the hill at 1110 East Thirteenth Street, is resplendent with twinkling lights and scarlet bows on wreaths and swags of deep forest greenery. Soon our spacious upstairs and downstairs galleries will be filled with a plethora of imaginative Christmas giftables.

Mark your calendars now for November 30th and December 1st and 2nd. Plan to visit artCentral’s elegant setting filled with beauty, inspiration and pocket-friendly presents, and treat yourself to the ultimate experience in  holiday shopping for your loved ones, friends, teachers and business associates.

You’ll want to purchase an armful to share with your foodie family and friends! In addition to a wide range of recipes there are nineteen paintings by area artists including Andy Thomas and Lowell Davis.

Sandy Higgins, former artCentral director, is one of the most prolific contributors to the cookbook which features holiday pleasing recipes that are delicious, simple and the epitome of comfort food for the cold days ahead. The culinary creations of Judy Bracht, artist Jerry Ellis and Dina Thomas are among those offered by Carthaginians who know their way around a stove. You’ll elicit the rave reviews every cook loves to hear, when you serve the following menu for your family and company.

Put 2 T oil into iron skillet. Place in 450° oven. Mix all other ingredients, adding baking powder and buttermilk last. Start with 1 c buttermilk and add more as needed to make mixture pourable. Pour into hot skillet and bake approximately 20 minutes or until top is lightly browned.
