HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE Art from the Other Side
Picture
DEBORAH BARNETT | Featured Artist

As we approach Halloween (All Hallows’ Eve), the evening before All Saints (All Hallows’) Day followed by All Souls Day, some sages are prone to say that this is that time of year when the veil grows thin between the temporal and the spiritual worlds—the time when those who are inclined have access to the knowings and the understandings of the powers on the other side beyond our ordinary, everyday earthbound experience.

Some savvy artists among us are skilled in accessing and living in this other dimension the year round. Deborah Barnett, one of four Featured Artists in artCentral’s HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE, is just such an artist. With her heart tuned by intuition and instinct and listening for inspiration, she has mastered the art of going over in a state of surrender that allows the creative process to take over her telling of what she finds.
As a fabulously gifted creator, through her painting and singing and penning of songs and poetry Deborah shares with us the spirited treasures she discovers and brings back from those times she spends on the other side.

Make your way to artCentral’s home in Hyde House, 1110 East Thirteenth Street in Carthage, and see for yourself the amazing collection of wealth Deborah has brought to share with us in her beautiful array of brilliantly colored mandalas. They are waiting for your viewing and choosing to take home as your own to display or to give away to someone special on your shopping list.

The mandala—Sanskrit for circle—generally represents the spiritual journey, starting from the outside and moving into the inner core of awareness. For centuries in various spiritual traditions mandalas have been used as spiritual guidance tools—aides to meditation that focus attention and establish a sacred space.

First appearing in Buddhist art that was produced in India during the first century B.C.E., the mandala subsequently was incorporated into many eastern religions. The Cosmati pavements, including those at Westminster Abbey, are geometric, mandala-like mosaic designs from thirteenth century Italy.
There are many types of Celtic mandalas—symbols of spiritual growth and the realization of one’s heart desires, visions and divine ancestry. All Celtic mandalas contain a central point with Celtic symbols contained inside an outer circle. Patterns are typically repeated around the circle to create an attractive design. The Celtic knot symbolizes the timeless nature of spirit and speaks of birth and rebirth in both the physical and spiritual realm. You can see the Celtic influence in several of Deborah’s mandalas.
In contemporary Christianity here in Carthage you can find mandalas in the beauty of  Grace Episcopal Church as you look up to the Rose Window in the sanctuary and while you meditatively walk the Biblical garden’s labyrinth from the outside to the center and outside again.
As you will discover in the galleries of artCentral, Deborah’s mandalas are painted on wooden disks as geometric configurations of symbols and images—butterflies and flowers and all manner of images representative of our temporal world that hold meaning for her and for many of us. They are joyful—filled with hope and celebrations for the natural world that surrounds and causes us to ponder the magical, mystical source of their creation on the other side.
Underwritten with the gracious support of Old Missouri Bank, the 2022 artCentral HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE showcasing Deborah’s mandalas and the giftable art of Kristin Girard, Brenda Hayes and Jane McCaulley and all the SMALL WORKS|GREAT WONDERS Silent Auction donations made by artCentral artists are available for viewing, purchasing and bidding in Hyde House during weekend gallery hours, Fridays and Saturdays, 12:00-5:00 p.m., as well as 24/7 online at https://www.facebook.com/ArtcentralCarthage/photos_albums and artcentralcarthage.org.

A Smashing Success!
Picture
FEATURED ARTISTS (l to r) Jane McCaulley, Deborah Barnett, Brenda Hayes and Kristin Girard
Underwritten with the gracious support of Old Missouri Bank, the gala Opening Celebration for the 2022 artCentral HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE and SMALL WORKS|GREAT WONDERS Silent Auction was a smashing success in artCentral’s elegant Hyde House home!

The evening’s guests, arriving up the steps lined with flickering luminaries and bronze chrysanthemums, crossed the expansive front porch to be greeted by artCentral member Alex Boyer who with board president Doug Osborn offered a warm welcome and an array of refreshing beverages. Board members Jackie Boyer and Kalee Vice assisted by former board member Wendi Douglas filled the richly dressed autumnal table with delectables and delights created by the HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE’s four featured artists—Deborah Barnett, Kristin Girard, Brenda Hayes and Jane McCaulley.

In the midst of viewing the art, visiting, sipping and enjoying the table’s offerings, the evening was paused for a few of my director’s comments and thank you’s given to artCentral’s HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE underwriter, board members, the fifty-eight contributing artists and all those attending and supporting the artists while shopping.

HOLIDAY BOUTIQUE artist and professional vocalist Deborah Barnett was joined by her husband Max Barnett on guitar and beautiful songbird of a daughter Sarah Grantham Manzer in a spirited rendition of Route 66.

Continuing their artful conversations and Silent Auction bid making, inspired guests returned to purchasing art for the fortunate recipients on their gift lists.

Installed by artCentral’s talented art-handling prepitor David Greenwood-Mathé, in the foyer and large main gallery, the Silent Auction’s fifty-seven small artworks danced around the walls and on pedestal perches in company with their individual bid sheets. Each work of art—painting, photograph, assemblage, clay or porcelain—was created and donated by an artCentral artist in support of artCentral’s annual SMALL WORKS|GREAT WONDERS fundraising event which continues through Friday, December 3.

All the Silent Auction art is available for viewing and bidding 24/7 online at https://www.facebook.com/ArtcentralCarthage/photos_albums and artcentralcarthage.org as well as in Hyde House during weekend gallery hours, Fridays and Saturdays, 12:00-5:00 p.m.

The gala Opening Celebration is tonight, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with festive table treats and libations in artCentral’s elegant Hyde House home at 1110 East Thirteenth in Carthage.

All the Hyde House galleries are beautifully filled with exquisite artist-created gifting and decorating items for your family and friends and colleagues. Of course, you will likely want to select a treat for yourself.

This year’s four featured, regional artists—Deborah Barnett, Kristin Girard, Brenda Hayes and Jane McCaulley—have been working for months to transform artCentral’s home into a sparkling, enchanting wonderland downstairs and upstairs, too. Their success is thrilling!

DEBBIE BARNETT, a vocalist and pianist for many years, a mother and about-to-be-published poet, first learned the love of making art in her family and now brings us her exquisite mandala paintings created with emotions and passion that shine through in brilliant colors and intricate designs. Hearing her burst into song when she delivered her beauties caused my eyes to tear and my heart to sing along with her!

KRISTIN GIRARD, using her education in microbiology while borrowing ample inspiration from the natural world she cherishes, has created stunning copper jewelry using her electroforming method and incorporating sterling silver or beads or precious stones into her fabulously unique collectible jewelry. I want one of each so I can wear the lovely feeling of her effervescent spirit!

BRENDA HAYES, the popular magical artist found on weekends at the Joplin Empire Market, will offer one-of-a-kind handmade journals, whimsical hats and scarves, delightfully intimate paintings and decorative treasures made with bits of the old lovingly upcycled with pieces of the new. I never can have enough of her whimsy and joy to take home with me!

JANE MCCAULLEY, is known throughout southwest Missouri as a gifted art teacher (especially at artCentral’s summer artCamp) and the imaginative creator of a world of beautiful, sparkling glass art that is sure to bring joy to any and every environment—homes and offices and the gifting season. One of her ornaments hangs as a welcome on our mailbox in Paradise!

In the Membership Gallery you will discover the irresistible jewelry accessories created by guest artist MARILYN YORK of Kansas City. In the Boardroom Boutique you will find my own art prints and cards along with artful selections from many other artCentral artists.

With fifty-four contributing artists donating their studio-made SMALL WORKS | GREAT WONDERS, this year’s SILENT AUCTION, dancing on the walls of the Foyer and Front Gallery, is truly amazing!
