ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP EXHIBITION & artCAMP - TRADITIONS TO CHERISH

As we anticipate summer’s arrival, artCamp and our Annual Membership Exhibition and Picnic will fill our galleries, campus and classrooms with traditions we cherish.

Our Membership Exhibition and Picnic begin on Friday, June 12th at 6pm.

Member Artists--deliver your entries on Sunday, June 7th, 1-5 pm!

Gold, Silver, Bronze (Christine Bentley, Juror) and Underwriter’s Awards will be given through the generosity of McCune-Brooks Healthcare Foundation, our Exhibition’s underwriter.

artCentral’s fifteenth annual artCamp takes place the last two weeks of July: 20-24 and 27-31. Schedules are available at the Library, Cherry’s, Mother Road Coffee and in the Information Box at Hyde House. Pre-registration is required. A full day class (10am-3pm) is $35.00. To sponsor a scholarship call (417) 358-4404.

Our artCamp educators are either recognized working artists, experts in their media, or public and private school teachers. Several are both professional artist and school teacher.

DEB BENTLAGE, recently returned to her Missouri roots, is a successful author of digitally self-published books, currently working on a photographic volume featuring the beauty of Missouri landscapes.

Originally from Kansas, CHERYL CHURCH-SAVING, teaching art at Carthage High School and artCamp for a number of years, is a successful professional artist recognized for her colored pencil drawings, rich in design and color.

APRIL DAVIS, well known in and around Carthage as an accomplished painter and experienced teacher in oil and acrylic, exhibits and teaches frequently throughout southwest Missouri. She’s contributing to our Great Wall mural.

SEAN FITZGIBBON has worked as an artist on the east Coast and throughout the Midwest and has taught frequently at artCamp. Presently he’s working on a graphic novel set in the Crescent Hotel of Eureka Springs.

Art was the emphasis of ANNE-MARIE GAILEY’s Bachelor degree with a minor in Art Education. Her teaching experience includes high school and elementary art programs, artCamp and Spiva.

An award winning artist, CINDY HEAD has shown her colorful, multi-media creations at Rose Gallery, artCentral, the State Capitol, Spiva Center for the Arts and numerous regional Art Walks.

THE ART OF GENEROSITY

At artCentral we practice the art of generosity.

In the realm of generosity, our current exhibiting artist, Andrew W. Batcheller, is a master practitioner. When Andrew gives, he doesn’t hold back. He invests himself fully each time he stands at his easel. When he shares with us, he gives without restraint.

For two more weeks Andrew’s generously filling
our Hyde House Galleries with his amazing oil
paintings, showing in “This Swallowed Life”. All of Andrew’s artist-framed creations, most quite large, some intimate as well, come from the generosity of his painter’s heart.

The generosity of Schmidt Associates PC, underwriters for “This Swallowed Life”, brings the beautiful wealth of this Exhibition to artCentral for you.

Come see and enjoy this remarkable, generous feast of astounding beauty on our walls through Sunday, May 24th. Gallery Hours: Fridays & Saturdays 12:00 to 5:00; Sundays 1:00 to 5:00. All Other Days please call 417-358-4404 to schedule your visit.

At Andrew’s Opening Reception last Friday night, the spirit of generosity was present, fully embodied in dedicated artCentral members.

Our Reception Photographer, Kelly Heidlage, with her always poised presence, generously gave her entire evening to skillfully weaving among the guests as she snapped a plethora of perceptive photographs celebrating our elegant setting and the happy gallery visitors present.

Creating a thematic backdrop of organic, nesting naturalness, Cindy Chilton, our Impresario of Tabletops, provided armloads and a wreath of sticks; Andrew contributed an abundance of smooth speckled stones; and Jackie Boyer allowed me to borrow the lovely twig basket from her porch (a prized gift from Alex). Judy Goff brought white lace cloths from her chests of treasures and angel wing begonias, then filled assorted wooden platters and trays with delectables to be remembered—her colorful crudités, ham and cheese graced angel biscuits and salmon-filled wonton cups complemented by her famous lace cookies and sugar-dusted chocolate ones, too.

The creative generosity of Judy Goff is an ongoing source of tremendous support and inspiration for me, as we continue to open the doors of artCentral often and wide. Not only does Judy enlist volunteers to assist, she also designs the menus for our Openings, Events and Board Meetings then devotes many, many hours to gathering supplies and making delightful foods to be shared. When I mention a desire for blooms in our planter, Judy magically appears and sets in an array of artful annuals. Judy’s creativity, ease of collaboration and energy are amazing—her generosity of time and talent a true and valued gift for artCentral and for me. I’m daily grateful for her presence and her generous, giving ways.

Call today (417) 358-4404 to say you want to give, too. You’ll receive our most artful, generous gratitude!

THIS SWALLOWED LIFE

While spending four years in wilderness solitude, once a week I made a town trip for supplies.

Traveling the winding dirt road on a sparkling late spring morning, an eagle swooped low before me, winging out front as though asking me to follow. I did. We were both headed toward the river. At the bridge, the eagle made a bend to the right. I kept going over the waters tumbling beneath me.
I saw this beautiful bird as a good omen, for I seriously needed one—a sign I could interpret as hope and encouragement to carry on. When back at my studio, I honored this flying messenger in my paintings.

Joplin artist, Andrew W. Batcheller, honors birds of hope in his new Exhibition, This Swallowed Life, opening tomorrow night a six o’clock at artCentral, generously underwritten by Schmidt Associates PC.

Andrew paints large. He paints with the courage to confront. He paints with the power to help and heal.

Batcheller’s paintings can take your breath, invoke your tears and break your heart. With fierce and poignant beauty, they begin the mending. With hope they soothe your aching soul.

In This Swallowed Life, this accomplished painter celebrates stories of hope told with oils on canvas and tee shirt textiles, bedsheets and pillowcases, too—all stretched to the limits, to accommodate the vast scopes of the narratives brushed upon them.

Batcheller states, “My greatest inspiration is derived from stories—specifically tales of how people traverse the landscape of this life. Stories of sadness, tragedy and pain are the most powerful for me, for they enhance my gratitude and lead me to greater appreciation. I always try to find the silver linings in these stories. Around these revelations, I focus my work.”

In the focused and exceptionally fine collection of This Swallowed Life, with nuanced details and a provocatively rich palette, Batcheller again and again honors the inspiration he finds in the brief life of the diminutive swallow. The swallow, for this artist, is an iconic symbol and harbinger of hope in a world too often challenged with political agendas—agendas that thwart the spirit and cripple the freedom of our lives.

The swallow, though ever in motion, is graced with superb ability to maneuver past all obstacles without ever crashing into them. Batcheller, too, has this gift—the ability to look at harshness and follow threads of beauty around and through the difficulties to arrive on the other side alive with light and celebration.

In This Swallowed Life, Andrew Batcheller’s arresting paintings invite you to take hope and to travel with him far beyond the obstacles to elegant places of restful peace and pleasure—places this artist knows how to paint.

WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN OF CARTHAGE

artCentral loves the children of Carthage! We love nourishing their imaginations and nurturing their creative expression.

artCentral loves July! July is when artCamp happens—July 20th through 31st. Monday through Friday, for these two weeks, here at Hyde House, in our large Pottery House classroom and on our campus, we’ll be celebrating our 15th Annual artCamp for students ages 8-14.
This year we’ll have many favorite returning teachers and some new ones, too. All of our artCamp instructors are experienced. Several are art teachers in our public and private schools. Some are recognized working artists with teaching experience at artCamp and in other venues. All our instructors love our children and value working with them in a safe, fun and inspiring setting where encouragement is plentiful. Scholarships are available for students whose artistic inclinations and need for assistance are recognized and recommended by a teacher.

While many of our artCamp teachers are busy lwith end-of-school activities, they’re also working on our artCamp curriculum. Soon we’ll have our class schedule ready for you parents and kids, and you can begin the fun of negotiating class choices, times and schedules. Watch for class selection and sign up information here in The Carthage Press, on our website (www.artcentralcarthage.org) and on our Facebook page (ArtCentralCarthage).

Our artcamp classes this year will be diverse and exciting! They’ll include old favorites like portrait drawing and watercolor painting. New additions being considered include creating a shadow box diorama and building a dream catcher with items collected from nature. There’s the possibility of a Click & Create class using iPhones or Androids for photographing and creating a PhotoBook.

For the first time this year, we’ll have two artCamp Student Art Exhibitions. The first Friday of artCamp there’ll be a Student Exhibit at the Carthage Art Walk. The second Friday night, we’ll host our first Annual artCamp Student Exhibition and Opening Reception. These weekend events, following the close of artCamp, will give students an opportunity to experience having their art exhibited in a gallery setting. Their artCamp teachers, families, friends and the public will be invited to share these celebrations for our artCampers and their artistic creations.

As we look forward to July, artCamp and artCamp Exhibitions, we have a terrific opportunity to honor students tomorrow, May 1st, at Hyde House. At 6 pm artCentral will host a Friday night Opening Reception for the students of Art Feeds Carthage. Please join us to view and celebrate the progress on the mural being created by the students in the Art Feeds Carthage program at Fairview Elementary. Come meet the student artists, enjoy refreshments and tour artCentral’s elegant home. The Exhibit continues through Saturday during Gallery Hours, noon to 5 pm.
