ARTCENTRAL AT THE PALMS FOR ART WALK

Art Walk’s season opener is happening this Friday night, April 28th, 6:00 to 9:00 pm, around our historic downtown Carthage square. artCentral will be greeting guests at The Palms Massage and Day Spa, 341 South Main, hosted by Doug Osborne—Palms owner, master massage therapist and art lover extraordinaire. Be sure to visit the Palms, sip a sample of a world class OneHope fine wine and
meet David Matthews, artCentral’s featured exhibiting artist and the evening’s acoustic musician.David, my soon-to-be husband, is a true Renaissance man who brightens and expands my world with his diverse repertoire of talents. As a trained chef he daily sets our table with a rich bouquet of culinary creations and their delightful, seasonal aromas. As a dedicated artist, David dresses our rooms with an abundance of his paintings and sculpture that beautifully compliment my own. As a musician plucking the strings of his many instruments, he fills my heart with vibrations that comfort, lift and inspire my spirit—morning, noon and nighttime, too.

I’m privileged to introduce David to you at Art Walk.  David’s been well-rooted in art-making from his very beginnings. His father was an artistic, innovative jeweler. His grandmother and mother were both practicing artists and skilled craftswomen, too. Cradled in a home filled with creativity and artful beauty, David was always encouraged to make his own expressions and seek inspiration whenever and wherever he could. After high school graduation he made an extended European study trip to explore threads of art history he found there.

Returning to the states, as a full scholarship student, David attended and graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute where he majored in oil painting. A fan of Man Ray and influenced by Chagall and French impressionists and post-impressionists including Bonnard, Pizarro and Magritte, at KCAI David developed his own unique artistic voice that still informs his art-making today.

In the eclectic collection he presents for your pleasure at the Palms, you’ll find David’s painterly voice spoken through his lushly decorated musical instruments, portraits and landscapes including “Lake Lamar” and “Bridge on Civil War Road”.

On mandolin and guitar, with his rich baritone David will sing and play original lyrics and arrangements scripted over time on restaurant napkins and in the pages of his sketchbooks. You’ll hear some of my own favorites including “We See Candles in the Trees”

artCentral sends out an art-felt “thank you” to David and all the makers of Art Walk. For a year of visioning and planning, thank you to Wendi Douglas, Art Walk’s inspiring guru; to Doug Osborne, entertainment coordinator; to Koral Martin, artistic guide; to the hard-working committee; and to all the business supporters who make the magic happen.

Stars and Yogi • Illustration by David Matthews

STARS. STARS. STARS AND YOGIS.

Stars. Stars. Stars. They’re morning swimming overhead caught in the branches of spring’s leafy, limb-laced canopy like twinkling fish dancing in the web of a deep sea net. A cacophony of exuberant birdsong provides their lyrical sound track on a cool breeze wafting through open windows. Spring. Utter satisfaction.

Blissed with pleasure, I slip from the warmth that cradles me to be a yogi and greet this lovely new day gently moving my waking body through my daily asanas. All is well in my world.

All is well in the world of yogi star, Stacey Stiles, artCentral’s much loved kids and candlelight yoga instructor who’s been volunteering her evenings to lead monthly classes at artCentral for over a year as she’s continued to study and practice for her certification. Our appreciation goes out to Stacey for being a star artCentral volunteer. We send her our congratulations, too, for she’s just completed her long-term intensive course of training.

Stacey’s now officially recognized as a certified yoga instructor and is teaching at Yoga4U studio, owned by my sister yogi, artist and artCentral board member, Helen Kunze. “Stacey is a natural teacher,” Helen tells me. “Yoga is her passion.”

I agree. When Stacey began her certification training she asked me to write a recommendation to accompany her scholarship request. I didn’t hesitate to say “yes” for I practiced yoga with Stacey in Holly Royster’s classes at the Y. I saw immediately in Stacey her full commitment to learning and enriching her own practice. I heard her early expressions of her desire to become a teacher. Bravo, Stacey! You’ve achieved your dream. You’re a sparkling inspiration.

This Thursday night, the 20th, will be Stacey’s final spring yoga evening at artCentral before sessions resume in the autumn. Won’t you please join us for one or both of these body and soul nourishing classes? Reservations are appreciated at (417) 358-4404. Your ten dollar suggested donation benefits artCentral’s work for the love of art and artists.

Want to spend quality time with your kids in a magical setting? Yoga for Kids and Parents is 7-7:30 pm. Candlelight Yoga for adults, 8:00-9:00, will be followed by libations, tidbits and conversation served up in artCentral’s vintage kitchen, 9:00-10:00. Bring your mat and dress to stretch. David and I will be ready to practice with you surrounded by candlelight dancing over our art-filled gallery walls and starshine sparkling beyond our gracious windows.

Two art world stars, Lowell and April Davis, are still brightly shining at Hyde House. Their vibrant, humor-sprinkled multi-media exhibition, “Dad and Daughter: Dynamic Duo”, continues during gallery hours through May 14th: Fridays & Saturdays 12:00-5:00, Sundays 1:00-5:00. All other days call (417) 358-4404 to schedule a visit.

COMMUNITY AT OUR BEST

At our last Friday opening reception for Lowell and April Davis and their amazing “Dad and Daughter Dynamic Duo” exhibition, artCentral at Hyde House shines as a non-profit art community at our best with everyone playing a heartfelt part.

In our beautiful vintage kitchen Judy Goff creates and presents delights for our festive table which David Matthews, prepitor, graces with another of his delightful installations—this one centered with an exquisite Lowell Davis doe and faun bronze sculpture on loan from the collection of Ida Ruth Locarni.

April arrives with her effervescent smile and her ever joyful spirit. Lowell, wearing his signature cat hat, appears ready to sign his books which he sprinkles with snippets of witty conversation. Rose, Lowell’s lovely wife in a chic printed frock, brings a large bowl of delicious Filipino buns to share.
Jeanie Slates, vice president at Community Bank & Trust, visits early with family to enjoy the art and express the pleasure of CBT as the generous underwriter for this fine spring exhibition and opening celebration.

Offering an array of beverages, Alex Boyer and Pat Goff greet guests coming through our spring green door. David Matthews encourages visitors as they fill out tickets for a chance to take home the exhibition’s door prize—“Old Memories”, a Lowell and April collaborative painting presented as a framed giclée. “Old Memories”, donated by Lowell and April for the benefit of artCentral, remains on display until the exhibition’s May 14th conclusion, when a fortunate recepient’s name will be drawn. (Be sure to drop your ticket in the pottery vase when you visit the galleries.)

Throughout the evening Janet Evans and board members Jackie Boyer and Helen Kunze are fully engaged as they assist patrons with purchases and lend hands in the kitchen. Me, I’m totally blissed, for every time I twirl around someone’s handing me an envelope filled with their contribution as a new or renewing member of artCentral.

Membership donations are the heart that sustains and strengthens artCentral’s work on behalf of art and artists throughout our region. Won’t you too become a supporting member of our art loving community? Help us keep the arts alive and thriving so the story of our cultural commitment stretches far while we nurture kids at artCamp, celebrate our artists and learn to see and sense with true visionary skill. Your presence and your participation keep artCentral a community at our best!

See April and Lowell’s “Dad and Daughter: Dynamic Duo” at Hyde House, 1110 East Thirteenth in Carthage, during gallery hours through May 14: Fridays & Saturdays 12:00-5:00, Sundays 1:00-5:00. All other days call (417) 358-4404 to schedule a visit. The public is invited. Admission is free. Donations are welcome.
